If you don't meet those milestones, you don't get any money. When you're a developer working directly with a publisher and you have milestones to meet it's a whole different ballgame. I think the biggest problem that the company had in general is being self-funded. I'm not blaming the designer, it wasn't his fault. Nineteen months later and the same designer was still working on the same part of that same map. (Read up on Valve's 'orange box' method of design - that's how you make games)Īnother example of the fact that there was one part of one map that was being worked on before I started working there. A month or two later upper management would finally look at the work and say, "It's all wrong, do it again." Rinse, repeat.Įntire maps would be done from the ground up, almost to beta quality, and then thrown out simply because no one would make decisions early on in the process. Designer would work on said task for two, three weeks, a month, all the while lower management would be looking over it and making sure it was going in a "good general direction." Designer would move on to another task. The typical work flow there went something like this:ĭesigner would be assigned a task (build a new map, rebuild an old map, polish a bit of a map, etc.). Everything you see in that trailer was phony. They built specific demo maps just to record video from to make a trailer. ![]() " The 2001 trailer was 100% scripted cinematic, and not actual gameplay. If someone from 3D Realms wants to drop me an email and set the record straight I'd be more than happy to add whatever you have to say.) (And please keep in mind I have no idea how true this is, but it makes sense. This whole meltdown of 3D Realms is providing some excellent insight on why things were taking so long, like this forum post allegedly from an ex-3D Realms employee. I don't wish for an rpg element as strong as borderlands though but the DN3D puzzle element needs to be there and maybe enhanced a bit?Īlso, here's a gif I've made out of the gore part of the video. I would definitely not mind that gameplay element added to Duke Nukem to make it less boring. Maybe they've jumped from collecting cards to collecting more stuff now and keeping it in an inventory? Remember how you could buy sandwiches in the 2001 trailer? Maybe you can just buy gloves or grab them from your own dressing room in your house?ĭon't forget the parts in the gameplay demo where duke opens some borderlands like chests.įor all we know, DNF might even have a small RPG element to it, or at least an inventory?ĭon't forget that Duke Nukem 3D required you to collect key cards and walk like crazy through a level until you found all switches for doors or hidden walls to crack and move further through the game. We all know that sandbox games offer stuff like items to buy. Maybe they are going for a more sandbox experience. Remember how they said that DNF is going to be a no loading experience? Something like open world game. They are going for interactivity in this game, so this might just be it. Whereas the footage shot in 2007 has a weapon wheel this footage is using the two weapon swap system.īeing rich and having lots of stuff, maybe Duke was given a dressing room, where he can chose different glasses and clothes?Ībility to change gloves or even remove them? The new Jace Hall footage is also using the current HUD/weapon selection system (can be seen here). To simplify it as much as possible, either the footage was shot on a newer build of the game after PAX in which the gloves had been reverted to their old versions or the footage was shot prior to PAX before the gloves had been replaced. In the footage shot in 2007 the Pigs have these artifacts (sort of like poles) attached to them whereas this footage does not have those artifacts.Īlthough the inclusion of the old gloves could mean that the footage was shot before the announcement at PAX but after the 2007 footage was shot unless the gloves were reverted back to the old gloves after the demo was made (which has been specified to have been made a couple of months prior to PAX) although if the gloves had been reverted back the posters/art/renders would have the old gloves unless they were made before the gloves had been reverted. Paying close attention to the footage it appears to not be the old footage shot in 2007 but more recent footage. ![]()
